True Blood – Alan Ball interview

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Bon Temps is going to be very crowded for True Blood’s third season, what with all the new vampires walking around. Executive producer Alan Ball, and several of True Blood’s writers and producers, sat down with fans of the show Wednesday at the Paley Center for Media to discuss the new residents of Bon Temps, Bill and Sookie’s future and a naked Alexander Skårsgard.

So where does the action pick up at the beginning of Season 3? “I believe [Eric] appears without most of his clothes in the very first episode,” jokes Ball. (But seriously, he says, fans of Eric’s amnesia story line from the books will have to wait until Season 4.)

“Sookie [Anna Paquin] is going to go off in search of Bill [Stephen Moyer], and she will find him,” Ball tells TVGuide.com. But Sookie is in search of much more than just Bill. “There will be more conjecture about what she is and she will be more driven to discover what she is,” said Ball. “She will get closer to the answer.”

Will her brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten) help her? Not likely, as Ball explains that he doesn’t share his sister’s magical gifts. “It’s a DNA thing, it’s a genetic thing and skips some people and gets in some others,” he says. “Jason has vestiges of it, in that he’s such a fantastic athlete and he’s a perfect shot, but he’s still human, whereas Sookie is definitely a half-human, half-something else that we’re waiting to reveal.”

Good news for Bill fans: He won’t be going away for an extended period of time, as he does in Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels. Ball reports that the TV series won’t be telling the same story. “Stephen Moyer will not be marginalized. Bill and Sookie may go through some rough patches that last maybe a little longer than Team Bill fans might like, but Bill and Sookie have a connection that will never die.”

So what about Bill’s big secret, that he only went to Bon Temps and became close to Sookie on the orders of Queen Sophie-Anne? Will that ever be revealed? Ball says yes. “I can’t say when it will be discovered, but it definitely will be,” he says. “We are definitely aware of that as we’re breaking the stories, and have been from the beginning of the show.”

Ball says that marital bliss is not in the cards for Sookie and Bill. “There is somebody who wants a wedding, but it’s not who you think it is,” teases Ball. “I don’t think you’ll see that wedding actually happen.”

What you will see is another human-vampire romance, when Tara meets the still-to-be-cast Franklin Mott. Their relationship will be unlike any other on the show. “I don’t even think they’re in the same ballpark,” producer Raelle Tucker tells us. “He’s more dangerous than any of those other [vampires]. She’s definitely playing with something that’s a lot more deadly.”

And Mott won’t be alone. “You’ll find a range of vampires,” supervising producer Alexander Woo says. “The vampire world really opens up. You’ll see that there’s as much of a variety and diversity among vampires as there is among human beings. There’s going to be extremely cruel and extremely kind. I think you’ll see there isn’t one archetype; there is a panorama.”

True Blood” officially ended its second season run on Sunday, September 13 with two deaths and at least two cliffhangers. The episode titled “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ ” picked up right after the last episode left off. Lafayette was under Maryann spell and handed out Sookie a white gown to serve as the maid of honor.

091409 1340 RecapofTrue1 Recap of True Blood Season 2 Finale: Deaths and Proposal

Sookie reluctantly put the gown and went to the ceremonial venue. Maryann told Sookie to repeat what she did but she was unable to. This would be the subject of discussion in the third season where Sookie discovered that she is not a mere human. Also, Maryann’s vibrating trick seemed to have no effect on Sookie at all. Still, Maryann proceeded with her marriage to the Bull-head god.

The plan to get Sookie as maid of honor turned out to be a bait to lure Sam into the ceremony. Maryann’s idea of marrying her god was to give a sacrifice, Sam. Bill managed to force Sam to follow him to the event and save Sookie. In the meantime, Jason and Andy joined the possessed black-eyes.

When Sookie wanted to help Sam from being sacrificed, Bill stopped her and advised her to use her gift instead. She was listening to Sam’s thought which told her to ruin the wedding with her power. She did and Maryann lunged at her immediately. But before Sookie got hurt, Sam stepped in, shape-shifted into the bull god form and ripped Maryann’s heart out, literally.

With the villain dead, the scene was moved to Eric playing Yahtzee with the Vampire Queen. Sophie-Ann warned Eric not to fall into Sookie like Bill did and Eric said it was not a problem. They had a deal then to have Eric “taking care” of Bill. Meanwhile, Maxine came back as herself and Hoyt dashed off to Jessica’s house with roses in his hand but the vampire was feasting on a trucker.

Switch to the next day, the town was somehow back to normal and the book’s writer Charlaine Harris was drinking at Merlotte’s. Jason and Andy were caught up in a messy situation when Eggs approached Andy to be locked up and Jason came from nowhere shooting Eggs’ head because he thought Eggs was about to kill Andy. The sheriff took the blame and told Jason to run away.

Sam, driven by his curiosity to find out about his nature, came to his adoptive parents to find out about his birth parents. The mother won’t tell him but the bed-ridden father scribbled a note to him along with the words “I’m Sorry”.

Back to Bill and Sookie, the waitress received a proposal from the vampire during a night out at French restaurant. Flabbergasted, Sookie could not give an answer and went to the bathroom to think. While she was weighing on the options and realizing that she wanted to say yes, Bill was kidnapped by a shadowy figure using a silver chain as weapon.

Third season of “True Blood” will be back on HBO summer 2010.

True Blood – Michelle Forbes Interview

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Her time has come…we think. After months of cooking up trouble — and a bloody heart soufflé, True Blood’s Maryann Forrester may be going down on this Sunday’s second season finale. Before we lose her, actress Michelle Forbes took some time off from vibrating her body to speak with TV Guide Magazine. And as a bonus, Michelle has agreed to answer your questions Monday morning after Sunday’s finale airs. So shoot us some questions in the comments section below after you watch Sunday night and we’ll get you some answers.

So, what was it like shooting the finale with your cast?
We were all out in the woods having so much fun. I kept losing focus because I was watching them do these hilarious and insane things. Anna Paquin (Sookie) and I were in stitches through most of it because we had some pretty loony things to do together.

What’s up with that vibrating egg we saw in bed with Tara and Eggs in the last original episode? There’s gotta be a connection to Eggs’ name, right?
I’m going to pass on that one because I want people to be surprised as they go into it.

Speaking of eggs, you’ve been doing about as much cooking this season as Meryl Streep does in Julie and Julia. Have you learned a few culinary tricks?
My cooking skills are not to be discussed. That’s what God provided restaurants for. I did however have a 5 a.m. flambé lesson to cook that heart. I thought I’d better have some coffee before I started. I was nervous I was going to burn the studio down, but it was pretty easy.

I assume you weren’t cutting into an actual human heart. Please tell me you weren’t.
No, no. I’m not sure what it was, but we all got creeped out when I cut into it because it made the worst squishing sound in the world. The irony is that I’m a 30-year vegetarian. I’ve been an animal activist my entire life, so the role of Maryann has been a bit challenging – especially with the lovely meat tree – Di-meat-tree, as he became known.

That tree is repulsive. Tell us about it.
It was filled with real meat and reeked as the weeks wore on. There are bobcats and coyotes roaming around that ranch where we shoot, so they had someone sit by the tree with a gun at night to protect it.

That’s the worse job ever.
I know.

So, we learned from Vampire Queen Sophie-Anne that Maryann is actually a maenad. What the heck is that?
A maenad is also known as the raving one or the wild one. They’re mythic creatures in Greek mythology who followed Dionysius and Bacchus and revel in chaos and destruction. They drink wine, have sex and have no boundaries. That excess is their quest for purity. As they sing their praises to their god, they hope that he comes.

And how can she be destroyed?
Once she believes the god is finally coming, that will be her vulnerability. Or shall I say her Achilles’ Heel.

The whole town of Bon Temps is gunning for Maryann. Should we be worried for her?
Sure. The whole town does want her gone. She has the whole town in her clutches except for a few stray ones like Sam and Sookie. Her final goal is to grab everyone so that she can achieve her goal. But she should have cause for caution.

082709 1145 TrueBloodVa1 True Blood Vamp Heads to The Beautiful LifeRemember Ed Quinn? He recently played trigger-happy Dallas vamp Stan Davis on the second season of HBO’s True Blood where was killed in the explosion that Luke sets off at Godric’s residence. Well, he won’t be dead for long. He’s actually heading to New York City to join the cast of The CW’s The Beautiful Life.

After playing Nathan Stark for two years on Syfy’s Eureka and serving as Godric’s lieutenant on True Blood, it’s hard to imagine Quinn stirring up drama in the world of high-fashion. But according to Eonline.com, he’ll be gracing
The Beautiful Life
as Elle Macpherson’s dear husband. For Macpherson’s part, she plays Claudia Foster, a former supermodel who now runs a modeling agency as a no-nonsense businesswoman, representing lead characters, Sara Paxton’s Raina Mayer and Ben Hollingsworth’s Chris Andrews.

As of this moment, there is no word yet on what’s in store for Quinn’s character but he’s slated to make his first appearance on The Beautiful Life in mid October and is said to be sticking around for several episodes.

Quinn is the latest actor to join the cast of The Beautiful Life. The show has been expanding its cast almost every week, enlisting
Dexter
babe Jaime Murray as powerful wardrobe stylist who has eyes for Corbin Bleu’s Isaac and tapping former Miss Israel Gal Gadot as a Gisele Bundchen-type model at the top of her game.

So far, The Beautiful Life has earned early rave reviews with its premise and its ever expanding cast, in spite of all the off-screen Mischa Barton-related drama. And hopefully, it will be more than just a bunch of male and female models sharing a residence in New York when it officially kicks off on September 16 at 9pm on The CW.

True Blood: First Peek at Queen Sophie-Ann

Posted by: | Comments (0)

080709 1738 TrueBloodFi1 True Blood: First Peek at Queen Sophie AnnWhenever there’s some casting news for
True Blood
, fans immediately ponder on whether the new actor can pull off his or her character. And so far, creator Alan Ball has been successful in bringing in a brood of talents onboard, including Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica), Michelle Forbes (Maryann) and Allan Hyde (Godric) —all of whom have made the vampire series even more worth watching. But there’s another newbie heading to Bon Temps this season and she comes in the form of Evan Rachel Wood.

As reported previously, Wood, who is credited for her roles in Little Secrets and Thirteen, will make her True Blood debut towards the end of the sophomore season, specifically on the August 30 episode of the HBO series. And though she’ll only grace the final chapter of the season, she’s expected to play an integral part of the show —which means that she’ll be around when the vampire series returns for season 3.

“Nobody’s ever entirely happy to see her” character, Louisiana’s blood-sucker boss lady, Queen Sophie-Ann, according to Alan Ball. “She’s very powerful, capricious and most likely insane.”

Ball also adds that Queen Sophie-Ann “has more than one secret agenda, which we will slowly become aware of over season 3.”

I haven’t read any of the vampire mystery novels by Charlaine Harris and I don’t intend to since I don’t want to spoil my enjoyment of watching True Blood.  But judging from Evan Rachel Wood’s photo as Queen Sophie-Ann, the 500-year-old vampire appears to be seductive as she is ruthless. Woods also seem like a good fit for the part given that she was cast in the short-lived horror satire American Gothic, taking on the recurring character Rose Russell.

Catch the rest of the second season of True Blood every Sunday on HBO.

As loyal True Blood viewers know, Tara has a new boyfriend. Played by Mechad Brooks, this character’s unusual name is Eggs Benedict Talley. But is he too good to be true? In a nutshell: yes. As Rutina Wesley (Tara) told TV Guide Magazine, her new man has a secret. It’s old, it’s dark and it will soon be revealed.

“I’m curious to know if it freaks her out,” Wesley said to columnist William Keck. “With everything else going on in Louisiana, she’ll probably be like, ‘I like you, whatever…’”

Sunday’s True Blood premiere answered at least one burning question: Is Lafayette alive? Answer: Yes! Nobody is more surprised by this turn of events than Nelsan Ellis, the actor who plays Lafayette.

As a fan of the Sookie Stackhouse novel series, on which Alan Ball based the vampire drama for HBO, Ellis knew that Lafayette, Merlotte’s wisecracking cook — and part-time pornographer/drug dealer — is totally dunzo after Book 1. When he arrived on set for the finale episode’s table read, he prepared himself for the end. “I thought, this was fun, time to look for the next gig,” he says.

But then… what’s this? That painted toenail in the car didn’t belong to Lafayette after all! “‘You know we’re not going to kill you, right?’” Ellis remembers Ball telling him. “And I was like, ‘Noooo…’” Ball told the actor that he decided to keep Lafayette in the cast after shooting a scene between Ellis and Rutina Wesley, who plays Lafayette’s cousin, Tara, in the pilot episode. Ellis and Wesley have combustive chemistry for sure, which Ellis attributes to their long friendship. (They attended Juilliard together in the early ’00s.)

So now that Lafayette has been spared, what’s next for the flamboyant entrepreneur?

When we last saw him, he was chained up in a dungeon watching a fellow prisoner get disemboweled by a very cranky Eric, his vampire captor. Ellis reveals that, this season, Lafayette’s fate will be inextricably tied with that of the vampires, but that their relationship won’t always be quite as adversarial. “[Lafayette] stays with the vampires basically throughout the season,” he says. “I guess how deep down the rabbit hole he goes with Eric is the biggest teaser I can give.”

“Eric makes people beholden to him,” says Ellis. “He did it to Sookie, and now he does force Lafayette to work for him to repay him for something he’s done for him.” Oh jeez, Lafayette isn’t going to become a vampire, is he? Not any time soon, says Ellis. “I have a sneaking suspicion that, in the future, the vampires are going to learn to respect him and not mess with him,” he says. “He’s going to find a way to elevate his position with them. Lafayette is a survivor, so he’s not going to stay in this scared state too long.” Excellent!

True Blood – Is Lafayette alive?!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

And drug-dealing, sex-selling gay cook Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) is chained up in Eric’s basement, but at least he isn’t dead, as he is from Page 5 of “Living Dead in Dallas” — a smart move too, as Ellis is one of the best things about this often frustrating but not unlikable show.
